Project Overview

LB Civil recently completed a wastewater renewal project in Waltham, replacing ageing earthenware wastewater infrastructure with a new PVC pipeline and manholes, to improve the reliability and performance of the network for years to come. The works involved deep excavations of up to four and a half metres, installation of new wastewater pipelines, construction of new manholes, and the implementation of a temporary bypass system to maintain uninterrupted service to residents throughout the duration of the project. Working within a busy residential environment, careful planning and coordination were essential to successfully deliver the project while minimising disruption to the surrounding community.

Beneath the Surface

Like many renewal projects, the biggest challenges were hidden beneath the surface. While the finished result may appear straightforward, there is a significant amount of planning, coordination, and technical expertise involved in delivering a project like this. The team managed a temporary bypass system to keep wastewater services operating, coordinated works around residents and traffic movements, and carefully excavated alongside a critical 600mm trunk water main – a major water supply pipeline that transports large volumes of drinking water throughout the network – and numerous underground and overhead services. Pipe-bursting techniques were also utilised in sections of the project, helping renew existing services while minimising the extent of excavation required. This video offers a look at the work that is rarely seen once a project is complete.

Technical Highlights

With excavation depths reaching four metres, trench safety and excavation support were critical components of the project. The combination of open trench installation, pipe bursting operations, bypass pumping, and work within a congested utility corridor infrastructure showcased the technical capability of the LB Civil team and their ability to successfully deliver complex underground infrastructure projects.

The completed renewal will provide a modern, resilient wastewater network that will continue to serve the community well into the future.
